For Beckham, Family and Health Are No. 1 and 1A

HOBOKEN, N.J. — David Beckham may be 36 years old and nearing the end of a storied professional soccer career, but his often intangible appeal is still strong enough to attract interest from Europe.
Beckham is in the final year of his five-year deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy and Major League Soccer. He is the league’s highest-paid player at $6.5 million in guaranteed compensation a year. And although Beckham’s Galaxy have failed to win a league title during his tenure, the club is on the cusp of winning the Supporters Shield as the league’s top regular-season team.
Beckham is in town this week as the Galaxy prepare for Tuesday night’s match against the Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena, a match that was postponed in anticipation of Tropical Storm Irene on Aug. 28.

“Once I finish the season, I hope with a championship, physically, I’ll need to see how I feel,” he said. “I’m 36, had a bad injury last year and it takes a toll on your body. I still have pain. I’ve had offers from Europe, but I’m happy to play and live here. I’ve been enjoying it and if I stay, I don’t think it would be with another club in M.L.S.”
Beckham was referring to the torn left Achilles’ tendon sustained while playing on loan with A.C. Milan in March 2010.
Beckham (who has done some amusing star turns with the host on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” most recently as an “employee” at a Target store trying to interest shoppers in a new perfume that went viral on the Internet) and his wife, Victoria, have appeared to settle in in Los Angeles. The couple recently had their fourth child, and first daughter. With his contract up on Dec. 31 and several teams in England (including Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers) expressing interest, Beckham was asked about his plans. The Galaxy has already offered to extend his current deal.
